 John Allen

Who we are

JOHN ALLEN has a general practice, with a focus on business law and estate planning. John became a lawyer in 1991. He clerked with the Ontario Superior Court and joined Allen & Allen in 1992. 

John is counsel for and a director of a number of private and public companies, including counsel and director of Peat Resources Limited, a public company listed on the TSX Venture Exchange.

John is completing his PhD in securities law, on a part-time basis, at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University.  His thesis concerns the effect of detailed securities regulations on emerging public companies. John has a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), and a Masters of Law (LL.M.) in securities law from Osgoode Hall.  John has been a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). 

John authored the Quicklaw / LexisNexis “Allen securities netletter” for six years.  He co-authored the 3rd Edition of the Estate Planning Handbook with William Allen and has co-authored the 4th Edition (due for release in February 2012) with Brian Quinlan, a chartered accountant.  He is co-author of the annual Handling Provincial Offence Cases in Ontario with Justice Libman of the Ontario Court of Justice. John wrote Defending Provincial Offence Cases in Ontario.  He is co-editor of “RegQuest”, a monthly update on regulatory offences and compliance in Canada with Justice Libman and Professor Aron. John has written articles for the Advocates Journal and the Criminal Law Quarterly. John was a part-time Professor in torts, contracts and evidence law for three years in the university degree program in Paralegal Studies at Toronto’s Humber Institute and he is currently a part-time lecturer in business law at Ryerson University.

WILLIAM ALLEN has recently retired.  He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1954 and enjoyed over 56 years of a successful law practice, beginning in a firm with his father Jack Allen and his brother John Bamber Allen (Bamber later became a Provincial Court Judge in Orangeville).  After Jack retired, Bill joined Lang Michener for about seventeen years and then, at age 57, decided to start his own firm in 1985.  Bill obtained a Masters of Law (LL.M.) from Osgoode Hall. He is a co-author of the first three editions of the Estate Planning Handbook (Carswell 1985, 1991, 1999). Bill was the 2004 recipient of the Ontario Bar Association’s “Award of Excellence” for exceptional lifetime contributions and achievements in trusts and estates law.
